December 10, 2009 – By now you’ve likely seen the numbers regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In its first month Modern Warfare 2 sold over 6 million copies across all platforms, smashing the competition. That’s better than five times as much as the next closest competitor. Over 5.2 million hours of Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer action were logged on Xbox Live on the first day alone. A limited edition Modern Warfare 2 themed Xbox 360 sold out.
In other words, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was a success.
As more and more videogames slated to come out in 2009 were delayed into next year, it became a running joke to blame all of the delays on fears of competing with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Mega64 even did a video spoofing the idea. Turns out, it isn’t such a big joke as it is a reality.
In speaking with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s director of product management for Xbox 360, it was revealed that even first-party titles aren’t timed to be put on store shelves alongside Call of Duty. Said Greenberg, “Our first-party lineup, we knew that the big incoming asteroid with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was coming in November, so we strategically launched some of our big blockbusters like Halo 3: ODST and Forza 3 in advance of this, so you saw those titles do exceptionally well.”
Greenberg went on to say that Halo: Reach will be “the biggest game of 2010 hands-down.” Of course, Activision is expected to release another Call of Duty game next fall, so we’ll see if Greenberg’s prediction holds true or if Halo will once more have to make room for the king.
